The growing obesity problem, coupled with an aging population, will more than double the number of people with diabetes in just over 25 years, according to a new study published in the Lancet medical journal. Researchers estimate that worldwide, more than 1.3 million people will suffer from the disease by 2050, up from 529 million in 2021.
“Diabetes will be a defining disease of this century,” Lancet editors wrote in an editorial accompanying the findings.
The vast majority of these people will develop type 2 diabetes… but there are effective ways to bring the numbers down. Regular exercise can greatly reduce diabetes risk, even for those who are at greater genetic risk for developing the disease. Healthier eating habits also lowers type 2 diabetes risk.
