More than half of U.S. adults with uncontrolled hypertension are unaware of it, according to a study published in JAMA Network Open. Uncontrolled hypertension is defined as blood pressure above 140/90 mm Hg, which is either untreated or treatments have been ineffective.
Using national data, researchers examined the prevalence of hypertension control cascade outcomes (awareness, treatment recommendations, and medication use) among individuals with uncontrolled hypertension. They determined that 57.6% of study participants didn’t know that they had the condition… and moreover, 70.8% of those who were aware of their status and met criteria for taking medication still had uncontrolled hypertension.
“These findings underscore the need for efforts to improve outcomes across levels of the hypertension control cascade,” the authors wrote.
