Nearly 50 clients and brokers attended the MedBen University (MBU) 2025 Employer Roundtable on April 9. Industry professionals from MedBen, Sun Life, and Profero Team provided attendees with outside-the-box ways to blend benefits management and employee well-being, along with staying current with regulatory requirements.

Featured speakers and topics included:

  • Jennifer Tanner, Senior Stop Loss Specialist for Sun Life, analyzed high-cost claims and injectable drug trends. “In 2023, million-dollar claims rose 8%, and are up 50% over a four-year period,” Tanner said. She also noted that cancer and cardiovascular claims account for over one-third of Sun Life’s total claim reimbursements.
  • Marc Sweeney, Founder & CEO of Profero Team, addressed the need for employer plans to move from “sick care” to health improvement. “There’s a big risk in challenging the status quo, there’s a much bigger risk in not doing anything,” he observed.
  • Kurt Harden, MedBen Chairman & CEO, highlighted the ways that genomic testing can help employers lower costs while improving population health. “You can use precision medicine to match your members with the right drugs for them,” he said
  • MedBen President, COO & CPO Caroline Fraker and Director of Compliance & Human Resources Erin Kelly gave a compliance update on Mental Health Parity and other regulatory matters, as well as current litigation that affect employer plans.
  • Brian Fargus, MedBen VP of Sales & Marketing, spotlighted client success stories and benefit strategies that helped reduce spend in 2024. He also noted the importance of MedBen’s relationships with stop-loss carriers in premium and claim negotiations.

Thanks to Sun Life for sponsoring this year’s Employer Roundtable… and for everyone who attended. We look forward to seeing you in 2026!
